Publisher's description You don't have to be an America Online member to experience the immediate cross-Internet communication made possible by AOL Instant Messenger. This program allows Internet users to communicate via private, personalized text messages, and indicates when friends, family members, and business colleagues are online. AOL Instant Messenger combines AOL's Buddy List and Instant Message features, enabling users to send and respond to messages immediately. Other features include a user directory and buddy chat capabilities, personalized news, and a Neighborhood Watch feature so you can disconnect when crank chatters contact you. You also can send personalized greetings from your Buddy List, forward a copy of your Buddy List to a friend, and add your own comments to an entry on your Buddy List. You can also create and share digital photo albums with your friends.
Editor's description AOL finally updates its aging messenger to incorporate tools that are old hat to other chatware. AIM 6 offers a well-designed chat window--with tabs to manage multiple conversations simultaneously--and leaves the Buddy window to manage links to other services, extra features, and of course, ads.

The new version can save old chats, something lacking in older versions. The Buddy List limit has grown to 1,000 contacts, and the integration with file sharing has become smoother. The new layout is a nice touch, leaving behind the Windows 2000-chic and taking a big step toward 2006.

Of the new buddy window tools, the XM Radio player (with some AOL-only channels) is the best, but thats expected given XM's relationship with AOL. The other features--Plaxo address book, cell phone integration, telephony and a free local "dummy" number with free voice mail--are nice touches, but nothing that blasts AIM ahead of the pack.

In fact, most of the changes merely help AIM catch up to the competition, not push it ahead. Whether these services can entice new users as well as those who have drifted to multichatware supporting apps remains to be seen.
