Editor's description As an ever-greater number of people build their own Web sites, FTP programs are more important than ever. FTP Explorer is a venerable contender in the market, first made available a decade ago, and is built on the familiar interface of Windows Explorer. However, many programs have passed it up in terms of functionality and ease of use.

The software can resume downloads that have been interrupted, transfer several files at once, and features a site manager that can switch quickly between FTP locations. The software provides no automation features such as macros, scheduling, or automatic synchronization of local and remote folders, and lacks the ability to perform site-to-site or secure transfers. It also launches a separate dialog window for each file downloaded, although that can be remedied through the Options menu.

With these limitations in mind, we see FTP Explorer as useful for individuals doing rudimentary file-transfer tasks, but it lacks the firepower needed by administrators of large sites.
